For generations the Stoner and Smith families have lived and worked on England's gentle, beautiful canals. They plied their boats "Golden Boy" and Sunny Valley" up and down the cut and knew no other life. But now this idyllic way of life is threatened......

The younger generation long for life on the land, to discover the wider world. Ted Stoner (ROBERT GRIFFITH) hungers for a home in a big town, but his girlfriend Mary Smith (JENNY LAIRD) is still a traditionalist at heart and clings to life on the barges. Their seemingly irreconcilable dreams threaten to tear them apart....

Unashamedly celebrating the little-known world of men and women who have worked England's canals for over 150 years, this charming Ealing Studios romance is set against some of England's most beautiful scenery, filmed on the Grand Union Canal at Stoke Bruerne and Braunston.
